OK I'm at wits end here.

I've been trying to install a new case onto my ds for about 6+ hours. The reason it's taking so long is because the top cover won't close. It's not that the screws won't line up. I tried both my original top and the new top and neither will snap tightly shut.

There's always about a 1mm gap on the top side when I snap on the cover. I see that there are little hooks in the shape of "L"s all over the sides of the shell bottom. I just can't seem to get them to lock. Any help?

Really, this is going to drive me nuts.

I think I got it.

Fiddling around with the cover for my old ds I saw it slide in easily and with no additional pressure (this was on my old DS top cover and cover bottom. Not the DS I'm currently working on)

I'm guessing I just need to tidy up the wires a bit so that I can do this. Can anyone show me a picture of what the inside of the top part of the DS should look like before adding the top?

I think the ribbon cable is causing all the trouble so I was just wondering how I should arrange everything before closing it up.

DS or DS lite? Because there are small groves where the wires should go on both, If you force the case shut, you might slice them off.

It's a DS lite

I'm looking at the pictures in the Shell Kit Review, but I can't really make out the details.

a close up would be nice.

quick edit:

I got the top cover to close however the bottom 2 screw holes don't line up. It's not wobbly or loose so I'm not complaining (I'm leaving this DS to my bro, and he's pretty handy so I'm sure if it acts weird he'll give it a go)

Now I'm having trouble with the left shoulder button. It seems a little loose. I tried flipping the spring other way and it's still being a pain.

edit 2:

I'm so frustrated. I followed all the instructions, but the right hinge (LED) won't stay put. the top cover is loose again, and my DS is a baby blue, retarded mess. It still turns on and I can play games, but I regret ever doing this.

If someone can lead me step by step to repair my DS to it's former self (I don't care if I need to reuse my old shell. I'd truly appreciate it.

I'm talking about some serious hand holding here. PLEASE HELP!

well I'm fucked.

I decided to put the ds back into the white case, but not before accidentally tearing the right speaker wire.

the led hinge is still a goddamn mystery to me, and i give up on this.

If you send it to me, I'll give it a go, and I can repair the speaker whilst I'm at it.

hi, I am new to this and need some help. We bought a replacement shell for our daughters DS lite. everything has gone well until now.

How can you really tell if the top screen has shorted? We have gone through your guide (the best I have found) and found somethings I needed to change.

Now the system will not cut on. How hard is it to replace the top screen? and where would you recommend getting a knew one? I think we have ruined the original trying to get into the new shell.

I really do not want to buy a new DS.

Thanks

I haven't tried this, but from what I've read the majority of the problems are with the ribbon cable to the top screen.

If I were you, I'd check that it is pushed in correctly before buying another screen.

A lot of people seem to have trouble with this; I think extreme caution should be given to anyone who wants to try this first, hatrix.

I think I already have, I'll double check.

You're right though, first you should really check that your ribbon cables are in straight. More description and some photographs of your problem would be helpful.

Example, does it flicker and turn off, does it not come on at all, have you tried with mains plugged in, etc?

Hello Ben. I found this forum when googling for help with replacing my son's DS shell and hope you can give me some advice.

When I took the broken DS apart a ribbon cable (not the one that clips off in your directions) somehow came loose. I was trying to figure out how to reattach it and saw that there is a little clip that opens up on the motherboard there. The problem is that the clip opens in the wrong direction to put the ribbon cable under it.

I have some decent pictures of the problem but I don't know how to post them here.

Thanks so much

Okay I think I have figured out how to post my pictures here so here goes...

As you can see on one of the pics there is a little clip that flips up but it opens on the opposite side from the ribbon cable. By the way this is a DS Lite.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Slide the ribbon cable through the front, there should be a hole with the clip up. Once in, push the clip down to lock the whole thing in place. Yes, it is an unusual one, I had to take my DS apart to take a peek. The hardest part is getting the cable in, so you might want to do some more disassembly. It's quite fiddly.

Thank you so very much. I am impressed that you took apart your
DS to see for yourself. It is so kind of you to help out strangers
like myself and ask nothing in return.

I had originally tried to slide the cable under somehow but that was
before I discovered the clip lifted up. I will try that again now.
As far as any additional disassembly - I hope that doesn't have to
happen. This whole adventure has my nerves on edge as I am technically
challenged.

Thanks again for your time.
