PS3 no longer backwards compatible?

I was thinking of eventually getting a PS3 but now that Sony has announced that they aren't going to be making any more PS3's with backwards compatibility with PS and PS2 games, I may or may not buy one... Anyone else think that Sony is doin something stupid with taking the compatibility out?

Are you sure about the PS1 compatibility?
I heard that used an emulator so it would cost sony no extra to add it in.

As for PS2 support...I can understand as I think that needs a new set of chips = pricey.

But no backwards compatibilty would suck - I want to play some of the mint PS2 games like god of war and kingdom hearts - but I'd have to buy ANOTHER console for that then...
If they take out backwards compatibility then a PS2 is more tempting to me than a PS3 at this current stage.

Look just get a PS2 along with the PS3. Its cheaper than buying a backwards compatible PS3. Plus, ALL of your games will work with it. With a backwards compatible PS3, you're at the mercy of the firmware.

Also @ Kira-

They used to include the full PS2 hardware essentially in a PS3. They quickly changed that to cut costs and made it emulation software instead. So its still pittance for sony to include PS2 emulation in each PS3, but they choose not to I *think* to differentiate their products.

The thing is, I'm not sure I want to buy a PS2. I know like 3 people who have bought the slim PS2's and all 3 of them have had the system overheating in some way because of the small size. Sony may have fixed that problem by now though so idk.

Anyway, if I'm gonna be puttin out such a huge chunk of change for a console, I'd like it to have more functionality...not less.

PS3 is more than capable of emulating PS2 games. In fact, launch PS3 in Europe did have software emulation for PS2 games.

Yeah, that's why I don't understand why Sony is taking the backwards compatibility out.

hrmm yeah I heard some PS3s used emulation for PS2 games, but I also heard it was still incomplete, and some games were pretty glitchy, and maybe unplayable...so I don't know.

I don't know why sony are doing this ...are Sony going to cut backwards compatibility on PS3, phase it out, then bring back the PS2?

Why can't Sony and Microsoft do like Nintendo is doing? On the Wii, you can play ANY GameCube games without a single glitch/problem that was not on the gamecube.

I believe thats because the Wii has like, a built in gamecube almost in it.

PS3 DID have the same functionality before with its very first US PS3's, but they took it out because it made the consoles very expensive. Emulation is cheaper.

The emulation service was bad, but the amount of supported games that aren't glitchy has substantially increased. However yes some still don't work very well, and some games don't work at all. It was also a full $600 US when the PS3 had a built in PS2 of sorts. Now, its only $400 US. You can pick up a 2nd hand PS2 really cheaply, and it'd still be well under the cost of a fully backwards capable PS3.

Windmill is right, 360 and PS3 are completely different hardware so old systems need to be emulated or have the correct hardware. Wii was built on Gamecubes existing technology, so it was always possible to play Gamecube games. Everything else is emulated.

You'd think with the power of those systems they could emulate them right. Why pay for a game twice?
