I made a Handheld Gamecube, and I did have a worklog for it all, but that was on the old forums.. Obviously, that's all gone now (I've got a backup, but I'd require filtering through all the posts).
Pictures can be found at: http://www.console-central.com/content/view/1103
I've been making minor changes over the past few months, and I've started making a brand new back to slim it down a bit.

Too late, it's in parts to be modded.
I've got other designs that I've been hired to create, but the guy didn't want it publicised on the Internet, and now I don't have any pictures of it.
Basically, it's a controller with the screen mounted on it, and the console is minimised, handle removed and the screen and controller is wired to console, which is fitted into a backpack.

There aren't any.. The only pictures and designs that did exist were on my laptop (the one that broke, and I had my money guarantee that bought this computer).
It basically had a 3" screen embedded in the controller and the wire came out the front of the analogue stick of the N64 controller, which was the standard controller cable and video cable wrapped with heat shrunk coverings.
The N64 was made into a small case and I moved the connector so that the game can be inserted downwards instead of on top.
I then added 2 seperate battery packs (because at the time it ran on 2 different voltages) which came from some old RC cars which had a matching voltage.
I then bought a backpack with a front pocket, I sliced open the bag and inserted the system and made an opening in that front pocket so games can be loaded and the controller can be put away.
I then hot glued a zipper in the slit to keep the console in there, in place.
That way you can store books and other crap in the bag, and the front pocket is for the portable itself. It weighed about 3kg including the bag.
I sold it for £300, it was a lot of work.

Nintendo will definitely make a new handheld eventually. I doubt that'll be anytime soon with the huge success of the ds and ds lite. I'm also pretty sure that the next handheld will have gamecube graphics or better.

How about making a handheld PS2 unit. Its smaller and im sure if you relocate some things it can be more portable.

Easily, although you're probably better off emulating it on a PDA or PSP / DS.
Still, if you want to use your original cartridges it can be done.
