PS1 compatibility

I learnt the other day that you can play your original PS1 discs in PS3. I was told that you can only play downloaded PS1 games from the store.. Funny since PAL PS3 apparently can't play PS2 games at all (yet, has a PS2 memory card manager, whats the deal with that?)

Anyway, I've started playing some old PS1 games again now, I've got RE 1 and Abes Oddesey.

Looking for more...

What's the deal with PS2 memory card manager on PAL PS3 if it can't play PS2 discs?

The Wikipedia page says that all PS3 models can play PS1 games and that all but the 40GB model can also play PS2 games. However, I've heard different things elsewhere. Apparently the newer 80GB ones (including the PAL ones) don't have PS2 compatibility.

PS3's can play PS1 games off the discs because PS1 games are CD based.

HOWEVER, non-backwardcompatible SP3's cant play PS2 games because PS2 uses a DVD that has to spin at a certain speed, so they cannot be played by the laser put into the cheaper models that cannot play PS2 games. the disc wont spin fast enough for the laser to read it.

I heard that it lacks the emotion engine that the PS2 has..

40GB PS3 can't play PS2 games. It recognises the disc, but it says that it's unsupported.

PS2 discs spin at the same speed as a DVD disc, and DVDs play just fine. Why would it read DVDs but not PS2 discs if it was the laser?

All that aside

Resident Evil 1 is one of hte best games ever. And good choice on Abes Oddesy too. I used to love that game. Im trying to think what classics Ive got up in the loft.

The first sient hill and Dino Crisis were both good games. Maybe dino crisis was a bit daft but still fun.

Abes Oddesey.. Wasn't that a PC game?

You're right though, Resident evil (not so great but has a heck of a reputation for survival horror) and Abe was a great game. Abes Exodus was good, I've never played the other 2 though (Munch and Stranger)

The 80GB model should have software emulation. Even though I moved heaven and earth to find a 60GB version in order to play PS2 games the 80GB should play PS2 games however not all of them

Really!? How about the DS version? I don't have a playstation console to play it on atm...

Oh and as for PS1 games I say you should definitely try to hunt down devil dice (it's pretty rare) - It has the best two player coop ever to exist!!

I thought the DS version went into first person mode in certain rooms to slash zombies with knives? Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's different to the PS1 version.
