Just as quickly as Sony cobble together another security update locking-out those who hope to mess with the functionality of the PSP handheld, so the hackers begin releasing patches allowing the nefarious meddlers back in.
Despite the 2.60 update reportedly being the most secure to date, the crackers have already managed to slip within the closely guarded bounds of the system, getting Tetris running by way of an example. A cracker dubbed 'Fanjita' is credited with the breakthrough, and now this initial step has been achieved more patches will no doubt follow further opening up the system to those with even greater 'versatility' in mind than Sony. For their part, Sony are trying to prevent piracy of their games on the system, whilst those behind the cracking suggest that they merely hope to copy their existing games to the memory stick in order to improve the sometimes lengthy loading times. Crackers will be hoping that their continued efforts will leave the system wide-open once again, as it was following the 1.50 patch, and subsequently the 2.0 patch, though for their part Sony have certainly been making it increasingly difficult for the crackers... it seems to have turned into something of a tit-for-tat game, in fact. Supporting Sony's argument, the internet is certainly awash with cracked PSP titles available for download, and these can be carried on the newly cheaper 1GB memory sticks Sony are so keen to promote. A new patch from Sony will no doubt now be forthcoming, as the firm once again look to plug the loop-holes in their re-compromised handheld.
