Great balls of fire or just balls? Find out inside
We love Katamari is at is core a game were you roll things up over and over again and should get repetitive very quickly, so then how can this be one of the best games I have ever played on? Gameplay This game plays surprisingly well despite the controls seeming a little weird at first. Each level is a different landscape and most of the time your main objective is to roll up as big a Katamari as possible in either a set amount of time or roll up a Katamari as quickly as possible. To offer some sort of alternative to this Namco have included some more objective based levels which, despite offering the exact same rolling action, seem to stop the game getting repetitive. An example of these alternatives and one of the best levels in the game being one were you are automatically rolled around a racing track at a faster than normal pace and have to roll up smaller things until you can roll up a certain number of racing cars. Of course like all games this des have its flaws and the flaw in this game in my opinion is that the controls make turning slow and when you’re struggling to beat the clock to get that 500 metre Katamari it can be very annoying when trying to shave off those vital seconds. Graphics The graphics are most probably the first thing you will notice about the game when you turn it on. The thing about the graphics in this game though is that they don’t exactly push the PS2 to its limits but they are a perfect match for the crazy, fun and original Gameplay of the game itself. Really I can see these graphics being something you’ll either love or hate depending on how important you see graphics. The cut scenes in this game showing the kings troubled childhood really take advantage of the graphic style to add some more fun to the game and tell the story of the King. The graphics really do suit the games style Sounds I can’t think of any other way to describe the sounds of this game other than great. It features some memorable and upbeat songs that like the graphics really do suit the rest of the game. The songs themselves do seem to be Japanese-ish, which isn’t really a word but in game Katamari’s tend to be something-ish, and Japanese-ish is the best word I can think of to describe the style of them. The only other noises you’ll here in game are the somewhat annoying noises of people shouting you in the select meadow. The select meadow better than a menu but it has annoying sounds Closing Comments This game has got to be one of the best games of the year(and features the best instruction manual ever) and the only real flaw I can see in it is its sometimes frustrating control scheme. So because of its great gameplay, replay ability, fun and originality I give this game a 10/10 as you’ll be hard pushed to find a game more fun and original unless you have the original Katamari Damacy.
