Swords, Magic and Dragons.. What more could you possibly want in a game?
The storyline is a slow burner, especially if you haven't played the original Drakengard. Based 18 years in the future you play as the main character, Nowe who was raised by a Dragon (Legna) and who has become a Knight of a seal which protects the land. As the story plot begins to twist and turn, Nowe finds himself fighting against the Knights of the seal to bring justice to the land. What must I say about this game? It's a button masher! Most of the time you're in a field with hordes of enemies coming at you and you can do nothing but shatter your controller by mashing down the Square button to stay alive! On the plus side, if you're a fan of hack and slash, this is everything you want, allowing you to use combinations of attacks to take down your enemies defences. This game is basically a mixture of Dynasty Warriors with Dragons and Yoda from Star Wars! With dozens of characters to choose from within your party who you gain on your journey, it's almost impossible to fail at this game simply because it's linear with no puzzles or real goals. You just aimlessly and thoughtlessly tap your controller to pieces. The Dragon aspect of this game is pretty annoying at first. The flying isn't too great, the aerial enemies suck, but I must admit, the Dragon certainly brings a unique element to the game which makes it appealing at first glance! I absolutely love the graphics in this game, fantastic! The in-game graphics are great. There is definitely no loss of quality in comparison to some of the recent PS2 games, and the fact the PS2 renders 100s of enemies all at once makes this game all the more impressive, although the in-game characters can't talk or even open their mouths, it's a small sacrifice to pay for such awesome graphics! The video sequences are definitely something to boast about in this game. The detail and animation is astounding and this makes up for the poor music! I can only describe the music and vocals in the form of chewing off my ears, but considering that's not possible without a rabid dog, lets just say they should have spent more money on it and you're probably better off listening to a Phil Collins CD whilst you play this game (my girlfriends going to hate me for that, she loves Phil Collins)! Something catchy would have been nice, but what you get is what you get, and I seriously don't want to discredit this game for its poor basic music! The only way I can compare the voices and dialog in this game are by saying 2 simple words... Resident Evil. Hopefully you will all remember how poor the dialog was in the first Resident Evil game on the PlayStation (Jill Sandwich), the dialog here is no better. It lacks any real emotion or seriousness and I've spent half my time going "who the hell would talk like that?". Overall, this game might not be to everyone's taste. I personally like it! For some people this could be a game that just sits on your shelf rather than in your PS2, but this has certainly made me want to play the original Drakengard. I rate this game 6.9, Average - Good.. |
