Review of Daxter for the PSP.
PSP scares me. Why you ask? Because a tiny handheld was not meant for such power, screw stem cell research, Sony is playing God with the PSP everyday. I haven?t Played Liberty City Stories. So when I popped Daxter into the back of my PSP, I thought: How great can it actually be? Oh my God.... For those who have played Jak II or III... This is exactly the same, as in, huge environment to explore, GTA style driving, guns, enemies? platforming. It feels like a new Jak game, only it on the PSP. It?s got all the proper cutscenes, good character animation and graphics, and the classic Humour style the franchise has built. It looks, feels, and plays like a PS2 game. Only its not, its PSP, now you know why I'm scared. The Graphics are un-believable considering the machines, and it have the usual orchestral soundtrack. But this games best quality is the plot, and gameplay. So basically its set in between the first and second game, Daxter is alone in heaven city, Jak is in jail, but Daxter donen't know how to get to him. So he gets a job of an exterminator. Spending two years working in pest control he gets sent all over the city, finds out information and plans the jailbreak. There are old characters, there are new ones, but they always keep the loveable personality that all the characters in the Jak games have. Another great addition is the Dream sequence Mini-games. Daxter has clearly seen a few movies, since they are mainly based on famous moments from action films; they are funny, and a whole load of fun. Daxter has many weapons, designed for bug-catching mainly; Fly swatter, bug spray. But also a flame thrower and other similar weapons. Daxter is actually pretty hardcore, his boosts in later (or previous games) of taking down loads of metal heads is actually true it seems. The camera is borderline perfect, it always knows where it should be, and if you're not happy, you can adjust it with L & R buttons. This game sadly has two flaws: 1) Too short its the shortest one so far, but its still damn good, but I need more damn it! 2) Plot twists; don?t get your hopes up, Jak II had loads of plot twists that where amazingly good and helped the franchise no end. Jak III had a few good ones, one bad one, and one that was just plain silly (but still good). Unfortunately, the plot goes pretty much smoothly, nothing interesting, oh well. 87% a must buy if you own a PSP, Really, it one of the best available for the handheld. |
