Yes! Yes it should
Nintendo hit a homerun when it released its Wii
back in November of 06. Sales have been strong and from time to time it has
been really hard to find a Wii, especially during the holiday season. Many
people where scammed and some people had to pay a premium for the consoles
back when no retail store had any in stock.
It's been 2 years since that day, well 1 year 4
months since the Wii was first released. Ever since then people and analyst
alike have been commenting that the Wii is just a fad and that it will die out
soon. Even competing companies have gone on record and said that as soon as
people are bored with the Wii they will buy a PS3 or a 360. Microsoft even said
that people will buy a Wii as a second console. However, everyone has been
wrong and up to date the Wii is the #1 selling consoles around the world. But
is Nintendo overestimating consumers?
As of today the Wii isn't really hard to find
anymore. Stores have stocked up and there's plenty to go around and people who
didn't get one during Christmas now got one without having to pay a premium. I
can't predict what's going to happen in the future but what I can tell you
is that my Wii (That doesn’t sound right) was gathering dust for months until
Smash Bros Brawl came along. I didn’t even play gamecube games on it and I have
a huge library of games (over 50+ games). I found myself often playing my
Playstation 3 more than my Wii and I only have 3 games for the PS3.
This is basically a sign of things to come. The Wii
doesn’t really have good games and the games that are great get messed up
controls. It’s going to be a while before the Wii get’s some good games that
are worth playing. If you look at the list of best sellers on Wii you will see
that most of them are Nintendo titles or kid’s titles like Hannah Montana. No
More Heroes is a great game yet it doesn’t seem to make it into the best
sellers. It was there for only one day and the next day it disappeared.
Microsoft and PS3 have both been dropping the price
of their consoles and with better games coming out for both systems it’s only a
matter of time before people make the switch. Once again I don’t want to
predict anything; I am going based on what is happening right now and how many
people that I know of are playing. Most of my friends are doing the same thing.
They haven’t touched their Wii’s in a long time and are mainly playing their
360. Yes most of my friends have 360’s and not PS3’s which sucks because I have
no one to play online with.
Microsoft recently dropped the price of the 360
which puts it a below what the Wii normally costs. It’s only a matter of time
before Sony takes notice and decides to drop the price of the PS3 as well, but
I don’t see that happening anytime soon, Maybe during the holiday season. With
both of these machines you get HD graphics, a DVD player which in reality is
really worth your money. The Wii all you get is a Gamecube 1.5 with OK graphics
if the developer really spends time buffing up the graphics engine, which most
developers don’t do.
Nintendo really needs to do something with the Wii
before its left in the dust. If it doesn’t drop the price by this Christmas
Nintendo will basically be digging its own grave. If people remember correctly
Nintendo dropped the price of their newly released Nintendo DS from $150 to
$130 7 months after it was released. When the DS Lite was released it was still
at $130 but you got more than the previous version of the DS. Now both of these
consoles are about to be beaten by the competition. The PSP is already
outselling the DS and it’s only a matter of time before the 360 catches of to
the Wii and surpasses it in sales. Even the PS3 has a chance to catch up to the
Wii now that the HD-DVD is obsolete. People will be buying PS3 as a HD Movie
player and since it’s also a console they might as well play a few games while
they are at it.
Don’t get me wrong I love the Wii, I think it’s a
great console and I’m truly enjoying Smash Bros and soon Mario Kart. But like I
said these titles will only take the Wii so far before people start forgetting
it. I hope Nintendo is planning something like a price drop or new colors for
the Wii real soon to catch more consumer interest before people get bored and
look the other way.
The same thing goes with the DS. People are
starting to lose interest on the handheld and right now the PSP is outselling
it. It’s time for the DS to get another price drop or risk getting beat by the
PSP which has better everything that the DS.
