OK, folks Bioshock's getting the movie treatment, we've discussed that earlier I believe. But what other games are making the transistion to the silver screen? Read on and find out!
Hey folks, I've been away from my laptop for quite some time due to some personal issues I've had to deal with...but I'm back. And with a few tidbits you need to know about!
Bioshock is a big one. The game itself is basically an interactive movie. And with that it would appear that people other than Uwe Boll have decided to venture in turning our beloved games into a story you CAN'T interact with (without being yelled at by a few people watching with you.)
#1. Metal Gear Solid-TBA. Not much news on this one. We all know the story about Uwe Boll wanting to do the movie, and Kojima putting him in his place right proper. Kojima also added that there was a possibility and that he would be trying to get an A list director on it. Well, it looks like something's going down as Columbia Pictures officially have the rights. I'm hoping David Hayter gets the role of Snake (as if anyone else COULD do it.)
#2. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time: June 19, 2009. This one has me a bit worried. It looks like they may be deviating from the plot of the original game a lot. In the game, you play as the Prince of Persia, caught in an unfamiliar land and having to do battle against sand demons in order to return the Sands of Time back to their proper place. An evil Vizier is the one desiring the sand for evil intentions. Although in the movie, Jake Gyllenhaal (WARNING! WARNING! BAD DECISION!) plays the Prince in what may be shaping up to be a Hamlet tale, as he must battle his Uncle, who killed the King in order to gain the throne (using the Sands of Time). Walt Disney Pictures has the rights to this one
#3. Halo: Fall of Reach-TBA: This one isn't actually based on the game, rather it is based on the book (which in turn is based on the game). Stuart Beattie (GI JOE) wrote a screenplay for it based on the book, and it looks to be directed by Neill Blomkamp. If you're wondering who plays Master Chief, don't. Nothing announced there yet. Although I tend to view that the way I view Hugo Weaving in V: For Vendetta. Which is to say, "I don't care WHO plays him...we aren't going to see him anyway."
#4. Kane and Lynch-TBA: This one has the potential for extreme greatness. Now, I know it recieved mixed criticism, most reviewers thought it was average. But that was the gameplay. Storywise, Kane and Lynch is ripe for a movie treatment...and Bruce Willis is signed on for the role of Kane. I'll repeat that...BRUCE WILLIS! If that doesn't excite fans of the game, nothing will. Lionsgate has this one FTW.
#5. Gears of War-TBA: Warner Brothers has this one, and once again, Screenplay by Stuart Beattie (with a little help from CliffyB of course). If you've played Gears of War, move on, you don't need to read this...but if you haven't, then understand that the game takes place on a planet much like, but is not the Earth. A group of giant insect like humanoid creatures called the Locust come forth from the center of the planet and wreak havoc in a bid to take it for their own. The COG, an elite group of soldiers are the only people who have a chance of taking the Locust down.
#6. Max Payne-October 17, 2008: Basically think John Woo's Hard Boiled. Max Payne was the Inspector Tequila of video games until Inspector Tequila actually became a game star. Mark Wahlberg plays Payne, on a mission for revenge with both the cops and the mob out to get him. 20th Century Fox has this one.
#7. Far Cry-TBA 2008: No folks, this list would not be complete without a special guest appearance by our belittled Uwe. Now I like to give people the benefit of the doubt even if they have done everything possible to not deserve that benefit. That's why I'm going to look at the positives. A solid cast (minus Clint Howard...coulda done without Clint Howard, Uwe!) and a modest budget (estimated $30,000,000 US dollars) indicate that something good may come out of Uwe. A lot of his early films were good folks (ones that weren't based on games) and although I'm not a fan, I'm going to wait until judgement passes before I decide whether or not to hate Far Cry (Unlike my previous, and correct, assumption with Postal).
So there you have it. A lot of these are on a TBA (to be announced) for a reason. ANYTHING could change in their development. I've posted their most current status, and lets hope to God they get done right.
