And I'll tell you why...
Time Magazine recently published an article saying that the Apple iPhone was in the same league as the Nintendo DS and the PSP when it comes to gaming... But I say differently...
Their reasons:
- A majority of iPhone users are, on average, 26 year old males. A 'key-group' for gaming.
- One quater of all App Store titles are games.
- Seven of the top ten paid App Store titles are games.
'All of these different elements - with help from key gaming titles,
such as Spore, could: "Bring the iPhone into the same league as the
Nintendo DS and Sony PSP," Time said.'
Yes, key gaming titles would definitely help propel the iPhone further into the world of gaming, but would it work?
I mean, a vast majority of games out there are controlled by buttons. The only exceptions are a few DS and Wii games, and even then they're not exactly said to be the best games available for the consoles.
The iPhone has one button... To return you to the menu.
The Nintendo DS and Sony PSP are rather powerful dedicated gaming machines, an, let's be honest, an iPhone game could never compare to a DS game. For example; Guitar Hero: On Tour or Guitar Hero for the iPhone? A bit of a difference.
Whereas the Sony PSP will always excell when it comes to handheld graphics, and the DS will be leagues ahead when it comes to general enjoyment of casual games, the iPhone will only be there as a novelty or something you quickly pull out on the bus.
The last time a company tried to make a mobile phone which, it failed, miserably. NGage anyone? I considered buying an NGage, then realised the only decent game on it was a game I played before on the GBA before, and it wasn't even that good.
The iPhone will always be there for your bus rides, or the car journeys where you've forgotten a proper, and cheaper, handheld console, but until the day they invent a gaming focused iPhone, we'll have our actual consoles. And when they do make a gaming focused iPhone... Well... It'll probably just be a DS with a single screen and some motion sensitivity...
