My Spider Senses are Tingling, Did anyone call for a web slinger? We certainly did!
This game is for die hard Marvel fans only. Absolutely nothing like the film, so if you're not a Marvel fan but a movie fan, sadly this game isn't for you! Although it has an enjoy ability factor of about 9/10, you'll probably find yourself slightly heart broken to find how different the storyline is to the Spiderman movies (afterall, this ISN'T based on the movies, unlike Spiderman 1 and 2 from Activision). The gameplay is pretty much identical to Spiderman 2, but both being from Activision, I'm not in the least surprised after all it's not uncommon for companies to repackage the same game engine with different graphics to make a quick buck (Bust - a - move). For those of you who never experienced Spiderman 2 (it's a great game, get it if you're a fan of the movie) you swing around the city doing odd jobs, fighting Spiderman's enemies, saving people from falling off buildings, stop people robbing purses, take people to hospital, doing time races (overall, the mini tasks we're pretty annoying), and same as before, Spiderman travels the city doing miniature tasks like in Spiderman 2. Activision have expanded the free-roaming limits, and have included Queens to the map! One thing I enjoyed most about this game is the Marvel characters you encounter, such as Wolverine from the X-Men and The Human Torch from The Fantastic4. In addition to that, you alternate characters from Spiderman to Venom. There's no choice of who you want to play as, it's just how the storyline unfolds! Myself personally, I prefer Spiderman for his ability to fly through the city although you don't really have to do much running around as Venom! Venoms controls aren't hard to control, although you have to remember to constantly eat people to regain your strength as it depletes over time. He can jump high, climb walls, whip people at a distance with his tentacles, but he cant swing, but his ability to jump the height of 2 buildings kind of makes up for it! The storyline is pretty distant to the movie, so here goes.. The Venom suit was designed by Doctors Richard Parker (Peter Parkers father) and Edward Brock (Eddie Brock Jr.'s father (don't worry, I'll explain who he is)) in an attempt to develop a cure for Cancer. Unfortunately, they died. Their sons Peter Parker and Eddie Brock discovered the final remaining sample of the Venom suit and unleashed the nightmare of Venom. When Eddie and the Venom suit vanished in a flash of electricity, Peter learned one fundamental rule of the super hero business: "If there's no corpse, the guy's alive." Now 3 months later, Peter Parker continues his double life as both high school student and Spiderman. Unbeknownst to Peter, Venom is terrorising the streets of New York once again.. (If you own the game, chances are you read this already in the Manual, sorry I cheated...) Eddie Brock Jr. is Peter Parkers old school friend who were eventually reunited. Some of you may think "Harry Osborne", please don't, you're going to ruin the game for yourself by once again associating this game with the movie, so STOP IT! The storyline for this game is original, story and illustration by Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley, the force behind the Ultimate Spider-Man comic book series. The graphics reminded me of a great game from Capcom, Viewtiful Joe! The comic strip style graphics and the cell style characters really makes this game unique to the Spiderman comics, although I really hate Spiderman's bobble head. The game uses 3D Comic Inking technology to make the most authentic Spiderman Comic experience to date! Playability: This is the kind of game that you can only stomach a few hours a day. It's got the sickly factor a few games have nowadays where you get far, then you die at a frustrating bit, and then you have to start from the beginning. This game feels like the type that can only be played once, but it's pretty long anyway! Overall, I think this is a fantastic game only if you're a die hard Marvel Comics fan. I'd rate it 7/10 because I love the graphics and style of the game, but I'm not to keen on the storyline. |
